Finding the Appropriate Wood Heater for Your Home

The wood heater has a storied history, having served as the primary means for heating the home for many centuries before the advent of modern furnaces and central heating. Today, they retain a characteristic charm that goes beyond the basic fireplace. In some cases, they are even the ideal solution for a home's need for an indoor heater thanks to modern materials and advances in their design. Are you interested in replacing an old heater with a newer model that will heat your home via a wood fire? At Central Coast Heating, we have the necessary skills and equipment to supply and install this unique solution with ease.

A History of the Indoor Wood Heater

Before diving into your options for a wood heater in Devonport, consider how the technology evolved to reach the point it is at today. With an understanding of this evolution, it's easier to appreciate the benefits and advantages of modern solutions, such as those we supply. What should you know about the history of the indoor wood fire?
  • Initially, indoor heating via the burning of wood primarily occurred via the open fireplace. This large area with an open fire was used not only for heating, but also for cooking, heating water, and many other daily household purposes. Though bigger in size, open fireplaces are an inefficient way to heat the space and pose many dangers.
  • Those risks led to the development of the initial enclosed wood-burning stoves, which began to appear in Europe in the 1500s. However, without an adequate source of cheap iron and the means to operate them, these units remained relatively rare and reserved for wealthy elites. By the time of the early Industrial Revolution, though, stoves began to reach the common people.
  • The key advances began in the 1700s when inventors began to use materials to trap and retain the heat of burning wood to redistribute through a space. By the late 1800s, wood-burning stoves were among the most common methods of home heating in the world. Only a few decades later, central heating would begin to replace the old stoves.
  • Today's units take inspiration from the designs of yesteryear in terms of classic visual aesthetics while using advances in construction to yield ever-greater efficiencies. Wood fires today are able to heat areas from small homes and cottages, to large open plan homes. Their safety has increased along with the technology used in its construction. With a timeless appeal and excellent functionality, their continued popularity isn't hard to understand.

So what are the benefits of modern heaters? In other words, what are some of the specific reasons you should opt for this method over another? When you work with our team, we'll always put in the effort to select the unit that will provide the broadest range of benefits for your applications. Some of these advantages could include:
  • Faster, more even warming of your home. With models that are design with vermiculite fireboxes that punch out the heat or models that have a fan to circulate the heat.  A wood-burning stove radiates and convects heat outwards, evenly heating the air for a cosier feel.
  • More placement opportunities for expanded personal choice and a visual addition to the room. A wood-burning stove is a conversation piece that has both form and function. All wood fires on Australian market are tested for emissions, efficiency and clearances to combustible materials making them safe for plaster walls. Some fires have a small footprints making them ideal for smaller homes, with placement being a relatively simple matter.
  • Improved efficiency for lower emissions but better heating. Modern stoves use a variety of technologies and inner materials to cut back on the number of harmful particles released into the air. With a "greener" way to burn wood, you can stay comfy and feel good about it, too.
